The Perfect Day

A Perfect Day

Well, it sure wasn’t yesterday. Have you ever had one?

That question may cause you to pause, your mind frantically processing millions of bits of data that hold memories of moments, events, people, problems, victories and much more  to highlight days that you could call perfect. For some you may have already dismissed the question with a grumble of “Yeah, right”, I hope that’s not the case.

My wife and I have been binge watching an old series calledEverwood. It’s the story of a brilliantly gifted surgeon from New York City. After his wife dies, he realizes he has not focused on what matters most in life, relationships, he is confronted with the truth, he has failed at all of his relationship at every turn. In response to this painful epiphany, he decides to uproot his High School aged son and his eight-year-old daughter to live in a small town in Colorado, called Everwood. The son is not happy about this, but the daughter is quickly appeased by the promise of getting to own a horse. Andy, the surgeon, gives up his status and fame to practice medicine for free in this quant little community. The series addresses some very timely issues even though it aired from 2002 to 2006, I guess some things do not really change as quickly as we are led to believe. What I like about the series is it often

addresses these  hot topics, giving you both sides of the issue, so you can think, and decide for yourself how you feel. In Episode Thirteen of season Three

Cast of Everwood

several of the main characters decide to have a skip day, they are in seniors in high school but things don’t go well. For lots of reasons the day does not live up to the episodes title until one of them pushes forward to save the day, and he does. “Bright” a key character played by Chris Pratt before he became a Hollywood icon, saves the day in the last few hours of the day to garner the illusive “Perfect Day”, thanks Chris.

There’s a lesson to be learned here

Maybe the point is there are no perfect days, or at least very few entire perfect days, but there can be moments, minutes, hours that are perfect. When we can experience those, over time, the negatives or challenging moments from the day fade and the good stuff shines. Maybe what we should learn is to not strive for the illusive perfect day, but to squeeze out of each day, and each relationship a few pieces that are perfect. The more of those I can grab and the more I can focus on those. the better my day.

A powerful time when this happened

I remember a day when this happened. Honestly it was not a good day, it was at the height of our struggles to help Lauren overcome addiction and the issues that drove it. Each day was like a roller coaster. This day was just about ending, I had gone to bed. As I slipped in and out of sleep, I could hear LaLa, my son, and my wife talking downstair, they were having fun. I am not sure how much time passed but they finally came upstairs. As they did, I could hear them laughing together, I could picture their smiles, in an instant joy flooded my soul. In another instant I wept – tears of joy – as I wondered, maybe this is it, maybe we are turning the corner to healing. You can read more about this day here.

I know that day had lots of challenges, but honestly all I remember is those precious moments coming up those stairs and I realize it was “The Perfect Day”.

How’s your day going

Whatever your answer, its okay, the day is not yet over, you can still be like Bright, and make it a perfect day!

Maybe you had a blow up with your addicted loved one, or maybe you screwed up, yet again. It’s not over, you still have an opportunity to have “The Perfect Day.” At least that’s my prayer for you, now you get to go make it happen!
